Transportation Network

How Manzanillo Connects to the Inland Network

Manzanillo's physical connection with Mexico's inland transportation system is shaped by road corridors, railway infrastructure and port-access routes that link the Pacific gateway with a wider network of inland transportation assets.

Road infrastructure provides the principal terrestrial connection between Manzanillo and the wider inland transportation network.

Rail infrastructure adds a second physical layer connecting the gateway with the national railway system.

Physical connectivity establishes the geographic structure of the network but does not, by itself, describe freight flows, routing or network performance.

Infrastructure Overview

The Physical Layers Behind the Connection

Manzanillo's inland connectivity relies on several physical infrastructure layers that meet around the gateway, including road corridors, railway infrastructure and port-access connections.

Road Infrastructure

Road Corridors

Road infrastructure provides the principal terrestrial connection between Manzanillo and the wider inland transportation system, with validated RNC evidence identifying the main route-code groupings relevant to the study.

Rail Infrastructure

Railway Network

Rail infrastructure provides a separate physical connection between the port environment and the national railway system through railway corridors, nodes, access points and related facilities.

Access Infrastructure

Port Access

Port-access infrastructure forms the interface between the gateway and the inland transportation network, allowing road and rail connections to meet the port environment.

How Manzanillo Connects to the Inland Network

Manzanillo's physical connectivity is shaped by the interaction of road corridors, railway infrastructure and access routes linking the gateway with inland transportation networks.

01

Road Connections

The road system provides the principal terrestrial layer connecting Manzanillo with the wider transportation network. The validated infrastructure baseline identifies MEX-200 and MEX-098 as the principal route-code groupings represented in the study.

02

Rail Connections

The railway network adds a second physical layer to Manzanillo's inland connectivity, linking the port environment with the national rail system through railway infrastructure and associated nodes and access points.

03

Port Access Corridors

Access corridors provide the physical interface between Manzanillo's gateway and the inland network. Current road infrastructure works illustrate how this interface can be modified through corridor expansion and interchange improvements.

04

Inland Network Connections

Beyond the immediate port-access area, Manzanillo connects to a wider system of roads, railways and inland logistics infrastructure. These physical relationships provide geographic connectivity without, by themselves, establishing actual freight routing or volume.

Connectivity Is Still Being Upgraded

Several infrastructure interventions are modifying the physical connections around Manzanillo. The Armería–Manzanillo modernization provides a current example of how an existing corridor is being expanded and improved.

Road Corridor

Armería–Manzanillo Modernization

The modernization of the Armería–Manzanillo corridor covers 52 kilometers and includes expansion from four to six lanes, together with structures and interchanges intended to improve the corridor's physical connection with Manzanillo.

Conclusion
Key Insight

Connectivity Is a Physical Relationship

Manzanillo's connection with Mexico's inland transportation system is built through interacting road, rail and port-access infrastructure. These physical links establish the geographic structure around the gateway, while freight flows, network performance and functional hinterland relationships require separate evidence and analysis.
